In 2018, Pembina Pipeline Corporation embarked on its most ambitious project in four decades.
The Communication Infrastructure Upgrade (CIU) involved the design and installation of some 26 new communications towers for use in data transmission. The project took place on both Crown and freehold lands, encompassing 33 Alberta locations as well as three sites in British Columbia.
Caltech is proud to have contributed project services that were delivered early, and under budget, and which have set a new standard for utility and infrastructure projects. By the time the project was completed in June 2021, the Caltech team had contributed more than 4,300 hours to the project, with Caltech field crews travelling close to 100,000 kilometres to deliver the necessary geomatics services.

Caltech’s specific project deliverables included:
- Individual ownership survey plans
- Construction plans
- Consultation mapping
- Crown land disposition packages
- Legal plans
Thanks to the diligence of Caltech’s field crew, an engineering issue was caught early in the process, and was resolved quickly, saving significant human and financial resources for the client.
